John Sygielski, new president of Harrisburg Area Community College

John J. Ski Sygielski is being inaugurated this afternoon as the seventh president of Harrisburg Area Community College.

He has been at the five-campus college since July. He had served as the president of Mt. Hood Community College in Oregon.

He mixed with students at a cookout lunch on the Wildwood Quadrangle this afternoon before the formal inauguration.

“He actually understood us. He wanted to help us,” Mary Plessinger said of the new president, who visited her class a few weeks ago. She is 21 years old and lives in Elizabethtown. She’s majoring in elementary education. She stood in line with other students Friday afternoon to get hot dogs and hamburgers and speak with Sygielski.

U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Eric Cantor, R-Virginia, abruptly pulled out of a speech at the University of Pennsylvania Friday morning after it became clear he would not be shielded from protesters, including elements of the Occupy Philadelphia movement.

Cantor planned to deliver an address on economic inequality, but canceled just hours before he was scheduled to speak when it became clear the audience would not be limited to members of the university community.

In the build-up to the speech, it had become increasingly clear that several students were angered by his planned appearance.

Orleans Parish (La.) board approves master plan for school construction in New Orleans

From The New Orleans Times-Picayune: The Orleans Parish (La.) School Board has approved amendments to the city of New Orleans‘ master plan for school construction. It now will be sent on to the state board of education for final approval. City and state officials have been working out how to stretch what’s left of roughly $2 billion in federal aid to repair and rebuild school facilities damaged or destroyed during Hurricane Katrina and the flooding that followed. The plan formula that is winning consensus calls for downsizing a few projects at a savings and using tax credits to generate extra cash.

‘Racist’ bake sale at UC draws angry protest

(09-28) 12:54 PDT BERKELEY — A face-off on the UC Berkeley campus Tuesday pitted Democrats versus Republicans, pro-affirmative-action students versus those favoring race-blind policies and, ultimately, cupcakes versus brownies.

None other than former UC Regent and affirmative-action opponent Ward Connerly showed up at Sproul Plaza to help campus Republicans sell frosted cupcakes priced according to the race of the buyer – a stunt intended to mock legislation before the governor that would allow universities to consider race and ethnicity in admissions decisions.

“The point is, the people of California have said we don’t want to see race and color in admissions,” Connerly told angry students and faculty who crowded around the table.

“Go to hell!” yelled Ann Callegari, an African American student.

Warning over children’s ‘appalling’ handwriting skills

Education standards are at risk as pupils are increasingly allowed to submit essays digitally using email, memory sticks or even presenting PowerPoint displays, it was claimed.

Prof Carey Jewitt, from London University’s Institute of Education, said students’ handwriting skills were “absolutely appalling”, adding that many failed to get the practice they needed at home or in the classroom.

Other academics warned that a failure to teach children to write may stunt their development and hold them back in the classroom.

It comes after the publication of primary school exam results this summer showed that pupils perform worse in writing than any other core subject.

A quarter of 11-year-olds failed to reach the standards expected for their age in writing, compared with less than 20 per cent in reading and maths, figures showed.
