Ministers are attempting to split off striking teachers from other public-sector workers as part of a strategy to divide the union movement and prevent further mass walk-outs.
Teachers’ leaders are due to sit down with government negotiators today for further talks on the details of a new pension scheme. Sources on both sides said the talks were at an advanced stage and “progressing well”.
Ministers are keen to do a deal with at least one set of public-sector workers in an attempt to split the union movement and put pressure on others to accept a deal. That eagerness will only have increased last night as it was reported that police officers in London had been drafted in to ferry people to hospitals in the absence of striking ambulance workers, suggesting the strength and effectiveness of yesterday’s strike action was greater than first thought.
The teachers’ pension scheme has been identified as one of those where it is easiest to reach agreement and the Treasury may be prepared to make further concessions.

COLUMBIA — Juanita Davis is just one of the many seniors who live at the Carolina Apartments complex.
She and others got a special gift thanks to the Columbia Police Department.
It’s a gift she says that goes a long way.
“We’ve got seniors in here who are not able to go out and shop and so they are very grateful,” says Juanita Davis.
Tuesday officers and volunteers knocking on some apartment units delivering Thanksgiving baskets filled with frozen turkeys, non perishable items and pumpkin pies.
Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott says the baskets were all thanks to a partnership with the Oliver Gospel Mission.
Davis says its moments like these that really help seniors emotionally.

Some college math majors would be happy endlessly contemplating arcane mathematical equations.
Others are drawn to a more practical problem: getting a job.
For the latter, Bryan Hearsey built a near-guaranteed route to immediate employment and satisfying careers.
He was the mastermind behind Lebanon Valley Colleges actuarial science program, which has produced more than 200 alumni, with virtually all finding jobs in the field.
Our placement rate is just stunning, even in this economy, said Patrick Brewer, who directs the program.
Its unusual for a small liberal arts college such as Lebanon Valley, with 1,600 students, to offer an actuarial sciences major. Most rival programs are at schools closer in size to Penn State, Brewer said.
