UCR Scholar Attends Nobel Prize Festivities

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Hispanic studies professor Ray Williams is in Stockholm, Sweden, to attend festivities surrounding the presentation of the Nobel Prize for Literature to Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa. Williams is one of the world’s leading authorities on Llosa.

Williams is attending the weeklong series of events, including an exhibition on Llosa’s career, and conducting research for two more books he plans to write about the author.

Llosa was selected “for his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual’s resistance, revolt, and defeat,” according to the Nobel Prize committee. The onetime, unsuccessful candidate for Peru’s presidency is regarded as one of Latin America’s leading novelists and essayists. His best-known works are “Conversation in the Cathedral” and “The Green House.”

Williams, a scholar of the Colombian novel and the work of Llosa, Carlos Fuentes and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, is the author of “Mario Vargas Llosa: Literature and Life.”
