Thieves Gut High School of Copper Wires
CASA GRANDE – High school students and athletes returning from their Thanksgiving holiday encountered an unwelcome surprise Tuesday.
Their school had been targeted by thieves, who stole thousands of feet of copper wire, leaving their football, softball and soccer fields in the dark.
It happened at Casa Grande High School, south of the valley, near McCartney and State Route 387.
The damage is extensive. Thieves pulled out all of the copper wire from more than a dozen junction boxes — even digging up the ones that were buried.
A security guard spotted someone on campus early Sunday morning and chased him away.
“He didn’t know at the time what the person was doing on campus, but then later in the day discovered that all the damage had been done on the fields,” says principal Edna Morris.
The thieves carried the crime out with precision — which makes it seem like they knew exactly what to do.
Fortunately, Francisco Grande Resort has offered to host the school’s teams at no cost — but it is not the same.
“Even though it’s an awesome field, it’s not like having home field advantage,” says athletic director Barbara Cardinal.
The school used to have 24-7 security on campus, but that all changed with budget cuts.
There are no suspects.
