Helena-West Helena Schools Taken Over

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – State education officials are taking over the Helena-West Helena School District due to its troubled finances.

The decision announced Monday by the Arkansas Department of Education means the firing of Superintendent Willie Williams and the dissolving of the school board.

The district has been classified as in “fiscal distress” since September after a state audit identified problems with a lack of financial controls, State Education Commissioner Tom Kimbrell says in a statement that he’s worked with Helena-West Helena officials, but has seen a “lack of improvement.”

The district’s new chief executive officer will be Suzann McCommon, the director of the Great Rivers Education Service Cooperative in Helena-West Helena. Former Marvell Superintendent Ulicious Reed will become chief operations officer.

Nine other school districts statewide are classified as in fiscal distress.
