Faculty to Attend Symposium on Economic Inequality
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Eight scholars from UC Riverside’s College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS) will participate in a joint UCR-Tohoku University symposium on “Inequality, Stratification and Globalization” in Sendai, Japan, Nov. 19-20.
Anil Deolalikar, professor of economics and CHASS associate dean, will lead the UCR delegation.
UC Riverside began an ongoing research collaboration with Tohoku University in 2007 when the two universities signed a Memorandum of Understanding. In May 2009 a group of four social science and law faculty from Tohoku University visited UCR to present at the first joint UCR-Tohoku symposium.
The city of Riverside and the city of Sendai, where Tohoku University is located, have been sister cities for more than 50 years. Tohoku University, established in 1907, is one of the oldest and most prestigious imperial universities in Japan.
The November 2010 symposium is being hosted by Tohoku University’s Center for the Study of Stratification and Inequality (CSSI), which is a Global Center of Excellence funded by the government of Japan. Renowned sociology professor Yoshimichi “Mitch” Sato, who is the CSSI director, led a Tohoku University delegation to Riverside last year.
The CSSI received a large grant from the Japanese government, which is enabling the eight CHASS faculty to visit Sendai this month. The eight are: Deolalikar; Jorge Aguero, assistant professor of economics; Kevin Esterling, associate professor of political science; Tabassum Ruhi Khan, assistant professor of media and cultural studies; Robert Ream, associate professor in the Graduate School of Education; Annmaria Shimabuku, assistant professor of comparative literature and foreign languages; Todd Sorensen, assistant professor of economics; and Georgia Warnke, professor of philosophy, CHASS associate dean and director of the Center for Ideas and Society.
