Faculty Available to Discuss Propositions on November Ballot
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) – The following UC Riverside faculty members are available to comment about the propositions on the November ballot:
Marijuana (Proposition 19):
Robert Nash Parker, a professor of sociology and co-director of the Presley Center for Crime and Justice Studies, opposes the marijuana legalization proposition based on his research of alcohol and prohibition.

State Parks (Proposition 21):
Michael Allen, the director of the Center for Conservation Biology, can speak about the importance of conserving state parks. Allen, a professor of plant pathology, researches the effects of human activities on ecosystem biodiversity and functioning.

Global Warming (Proposition 23):

Initiative Process:
Shaun Bowler’s research focuses on the relationship between institutional arrangements and voter choice in a variety of settings, including California’s initiative process. Bowler, professor and chair of the department of political science, is the co-author of “Demanding Choices: Opinion Voting and Direct Democracy,” and has published in numerous scholarly journals. Bowler says the initiative process tells us what voters want, and makes voters responsible for their own government. The initiative process is intended as a complement to, not a replacement for, representative democracy, he says.
